Schools will either have internet access throughout the school, known as LAN schools, or they will have limited access where normally only two Access Points (pictured) have been installed, known as Slim Lan schools. The Access Point will allow for a wireless connection to the network as is found in many shopping centres etc.

LAN Schools would normally have a shared Access Point in every second classroom that provides wireless internet connectivity, and these schools will also have a wired network connection point in each room where a cable can be used to connect e.g. a personal computer.

Slim Lan schools would typically have one Access Point installed in the teacher / administration area as well as one Access Point in an area accessible to learners.

There is a limited range, normally around 15m, to connect wirelessly to the internet through each Access Point installed at the school. In order to determine whether you are able to connect at any particular location, the following steps are involved:

  1. Use a wireless device like a mobile phone or tablet.
  2. Enable the devices Wi-Fi connection in its settings.
  3. If the device detects the WCGSCHOOLS network, then it will be possible to connect to the internet from this location.
  4. The Broadband Connection Document is available on CEMIS by navigating to the sections marked – Reporting – Broadband. This step-by-step guide further explains how to connect your unique device.
